Flashback KEY – The Energy Transition Expo #1

Description

Italy is one of the leading solar energy markets in the EU and ranked third behind Germany and Spain at the end of 2024, with a cumulative installed PV capacity of approximately 37 GW.

While Italy’s solar PV sector grew only modestly between 2013 and 2022, it had already seen an impressive expansion between 2009 and 2013, when the Conto Energia feed-in tariff program helped drive the installation of nearly 17 GW of capacity. Since 2022, the sector has regained strong momentum, reaching a cumulative 37 GW by the end of 2024, with 6.8 GW newly installed in that year alone.

The residential segment experienced a decline due to the phase-out of the Superbonus scheme, while the utility-scale segment has seen remarkable growth, with nearly 1.9 GW of large-scale plants commissioned in Q4 of 2024 alone.

Italy has set an ambitious yet achievable target of reaching approximately 79 GW of total PV capacity by 2030. To meet this goal, an average of 7 GW must be installed annually—a target deemed realistic based on data from EUPD Research’s GET-Matrix©.

The strategies required to reach this milestone, as well as potential obstacles and solutions, were key topics of discussion at KEY – The Energy Transition Expo in early March. As the central hub for energy transition and efficiency, the event hosted over 1,000 exhibitors, marking its largest edition to date.
